Scientists and doctors have reported that besides the great nutritional value, Spirulina also contains phycocyanin, a phytonutrient that gives spirulina its dark blue-green colour (phycocyanin is blue and chlorophyll is green).

Phycocyanin has been shown in animal studies to stimulate the production of red blood cells. Spirulina contains a soft cell wall composed of proteins and complex sugars that can be easily digested.

More than 100 published scientific references exist in regards to spirulina. Studies are showing that Spirulina possesses anti-cancer effects and anti-viral properties.

Animal studies show that it is a powerful tonic for the immune system. It activates many of the different immune cells (macrophages, T-cells, B-cells, Natural Killer cells) as well as organs involved with immune function, such as the spleen, liver, bone marrow, lymph nodes, tonsils, and thymus gland. It is also used to help treat high cholesterol, hypertension, and diabetes.



Below are some specific areas that evidently benefit from Spirulina (in alphabetical order):

* ACNE *

It is human nature to look for beauty, especially in adolescents but many adults are not spared either. Main cause of acne is due to unbalanced nutrition and eating only certain foods.

During adolescence, the body grows fast, the nutritional demands are high, and the pressure coming from society, school and emotional problems is great.

For adults, acne could be due to inadequate diet, imbalance hormones and stress etc. This results in high consumption of vitamins and other nutrients by the body.

Mal-metabolism of lipid causes toxic material to be excreted through the skin, as is the case with acne. It is related to the metabolism of many vitamins and lipids.

Vitamin B2 deficiency result in faulty metabolism of saturated fatty acids. Hence an oily face.

Vitamin B6 deficiency causes mal-metabolism of unsaturated fatty acid and acne can also occur, but the face remains dry.

Nicotinic acid deficiency causes acne, leaving black spots because of pigmentation.

Vitamin A and Zn deficiency lead to appearance of pimples. This causes the pimples to become easily infected and makes healing of the wounds difficult.

Chlorophyll (or magnesium) deficiency means low production of the vitamin B group enzymes. A pimple is difficult to remove by the root.

The fruit and vegetable beautification method advocated by many nutrition specialists is meant largely to increase the body's absorption of chlorophyll and vitamin B group.

Spirulina is the world's second richest source of chlorophyll, vitamin A and zinc. It is a natural plant, so a clean and fresh face can come from within naturally.



* AIDS *

Spirulina, not only possess the ability to slow down the HIV virus, but also as a preventive agent against this terrible disease.

In 1989, the US National Cancer Institute announced that chemicals extracted from Spirulina with focus on blue-green algae's sulpholipids were found to be extremely effective in laboratory tests against the HIV virus.

On the other side of the world, in Japan, a group of medical students published a study last year on Calcium-Spirulan, a Spirulina extract which has also been shown to inhibit the HIV virus. The researchers discovered that Calcium-

Spirulan inhibits the replication of HIV-1 Herpes Simplex, Human Cytomegalo virus, Influenza-A virus, the mumps and measles viruses in laboratory tests, yet was also found to be very safe for human cells.



* ALLERGIES *

Several Japanese studies into children's food allergies have found that Spirulina is a vital food source for infants who are allergic both to cow's milk and Soya-based baby foods. Babies who were fed with Spirulina put on weight and became less susceptible to other food allergies in later life.

US researchers are currently exploring the benefits of Spirulina in people who are particularly sensitive to seasonal pollen allergies, such as hay fever.  Early results show that sensitivity to high pollen levels has decreased among people who have taken Spirulina.



* ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE *

The work on Spirulina's effects on Alzheimer's disease was mostly done by US physician Dr. Gabriel Cousens.  He discovered many brain-enhancing qualities, including improved concentration and mental clarity.  Spirulina partially reversed Alzheimer's disease in one patient and halted rapid advancing senility in another.



* ANAEMIA *

Anaemia is the deficiency of red blood cells. It can have various causes, such as blood loss, insufficient bone marrow production, B12, frolic acid, or iron deficiency.

Phycocyanin, a phytonutrient found in Spirulina, has been shown in animal studies to stimulate production of stem cells by the bone marrow. Stem cells are immature cells, which later mature into red and white blood cells.

Spirulina also contains B12, which may help prevent B12 deficiency anaemia, a concern for iron deficiencies such as strict vegetarians, women and those who drink lots of coffee.



* ARTHRITIS *

Scientists believe that one of the reasons for the rise in cases of arthritis and other degenerative diseases is that your diets have become extremely reliant on saturated fats which may prevent essential fatty acids from working properly in your overly acidic bodies.

Gamma Linoleic Acid (GLA) is an essential fatty acid that has an important role in many bodily functions, including the synthesis of cholesterol, regulating blood pressure and managing inflammation.

Clinical studies have shown that GLA can help with symptoms of arthritis.  Spirulina has more naturally occurring GLA than any other foodstuff on earth with the exception of one - human breast milk.



* BAD BREATH *

This troublesome complaint affects millions of people and has fuelled a thriving industry. Strict oral hygiene and natural remedies usually provide relief; if bad breath persists, careful dental or medical detective work can often uncover a correctable underlying cause.


Symptoms as follows:Regular experience of a disagreeable taste is a sign that the breath leaving your mouth probably has an unpleasant odour.

Many people with bad breath do not taste or smell it themselves, so look for possible clues from others: they step back when you speak, for instance. If you suspect a problem, ask someone you trust for an honest opinion; and Bleeding gums signal gingivitis, an inflammation of the gums that can sometimes cause bad breath.

Spirulina is chlorophyll-rich and best when swished around the mouth before being swallowed. These chlorophyll-rich algae may also encourage the growth of 'friendly' bacteria in the large intestine.

However, you should see your doctor if bad breath persists despite self-care measures. Your dentist or doctor can check for an underlying medical cause, such as gum disease or a chronic sinus infection.



* CANCER IN GENERAL *

We are still no closer to discovering a cure for the disease.

However, we do know that diet is an important factor in the onset of the disease and that some foods can actually protect against it.

One breakthrough they have made is the discovery that people who eat large amount of fruits and vegetables tend to suffer a lower incidence of cancer, particularly stomach, colon, breast and cervical cancer.

Between 1975 and 1986, fifteen studies in the US showed a correlation between high levels of beta-carotene and vitamin A - which are found in many fruits and vegetables - and a lower incidence of lung cancer.

One study showed that smoking increases the risks of lung cancer, not only because it contains powerful carcinogens in the smoke, but also because it destroyed beta-carotene in the body.

Beta-carotene's most important function, it appears, is in stimulating the immune system and destroying the rogue scavenger cells - free radicals - which can damage normal healthy cells.

Spirulina has 17 different carotenes. Beta-carotene is a powerful antioxidant, that is, it has the ability to join up with a free radical and deactivate it.

When antioxidants are present in the body, the cells are no longer in danger of being damaged.

Small amounts of free radicals are produced during breathing and digestion, but exposure to high levels of pollution, sunlight, smoke and bacterial infections can trigger dangerously high levels of free radicals in the body.

Once free radicals are formed, they can cause a reaction that can produce yet more free radicals in the body.

Many scientists believe that some cancers are the result of damaged cells running amok, causing cells to grow at an uncontrolled rate. Damaged cells lose their ability to function normally.

Another new research found that beta-carotene is of vital in the way your cells communicate with each other. Scientists believe that cancerous cell lines are unable to accept chemical signals from other cells, which could control their growth. Beta-carotene appears to be able to open up the communication processes between normal and pre-cancerous and cancerous cells, thereby enabling the body to send signals, which could stop cancerous cells dividing.

In this way, beta-carotene is thought to have the potential to reverse cancer.

Early research also shown that the carotenoids found in Spirulina is powerful agents in reducing the size of malignant tumours. Tumours that have been induced in hamsters in clinical trials have regressed when treated with Spirulina extracts.



* COLON CANCER *

Colon cancer is one of the most common cancers, especially among our elderly people.

Your highly acidic, low fibre, high animal protein diet upsets the self cleansing mechanism of the intestines.  Bulky, high fibre foods create roughage that scraped clean the walls of the intestines and the bulk had to move through in about 10 to 16 hours.

With our modern diet, it now takes about four days for the food to pass through the digestive system.  Worse, some food stick to the wall of your colon. It is coated with mucus, forming a mucoid and it can stay there for many years.

These mucoids are a major cause of inefficient digestion, malabsobtion of nutrients and cancer of colon.

Brewers' yeasts and Spirulina are the only protein supplements that are non-mucoid forming in the intestines.

Spirulina is also described as a 'metabolic activator', which acts directly on the body tissues at the cellular level to promote increased activity to burn up muco-forming substances. This aggressive cleansing herb empties toxins out of the body tissues into the lymph.



* CHOLESTEROL AND ARTERIOSCLEROSIS *

According to Taiwan Medical Journal, volume 80, number 9, September 1981, pages 934-42, an animal laboratory evidently showed that Spirulina has the obvious ability to reduce serum cholesterol and the cholesterol level in the liver.

These experiment results can probably be attributed to the fact that the high protein content of Spirulina has the effect of reducing cholesterol. This is because the amino acids in plant protein are different from animal protein.

Another factor is Spirulina’s has high fibre content including 89.7% non-fibrous fibre. The non-fibrous material is possibly the main reason why Spirulina can reduce serum cholesterol levels. The non fibrous element in fibre contains fruit gelatine, a partial fibre component, plant gelatine and a gelatinous substance, all of which reduce serum cholesterol levels.

These substances in the intestines absorb bile acids and rapidly excrete them as well as enabling the liver to metabolise cholesterol more rapidly. Diet therapy experiments have shown that diet therapy utilizing Spirulina also has a positive effect on mild cases of brain haemorrhage.

The basic reason for this is the reduction of cholesterol levels in the blood.

For example, a Presbyterian minister in the city of Kaoshsiung suffered a mild hemorrhage in his brain and had difficulty moving his limbs. After eating Spirulina for three months he was able to climb stairs again. The members of his church were very surprised. It has a very good effect on patients who have suffered from heart disease. Overall, Spirulina is very effective in the prevention of brain hemorrhage.



* CHRONIC FATIGUE SYNDROME *

Chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS) has been linked to many things including poor nutrition, immune system depression, toxic overload, viral infections, accumulations of organophosphates etc.  

It will take many more years and studies before we know for certain what is really behind this debilitating illness, which strikes down many people, even children as young as eight years old.


Although no clinical study has been conducted on the effects of blue-green alga on CFS, there is much anecdotal evidence that it can steadily reverse the symptoms of the disease, which include dizziness, panic attacks, chronic tiredness, muscle pain and headaches.

The reason for this is that Spirulina is both a potent detoxifier and a high quality food source.

Moreover, Spirulina’s high levels of protein, vitamins and minerals are extremely easy for your body to absorb and put no strain on your immune system or other bodily systems that may be under stress.



* DEPRESSION *

Dr. Gabriel Cousen's pioneering work in the USA on Spirulina’s remarkable effects on Alzheimer's disease and its value as a pure brain food has stimulated many people to take Spirulina in order to rectify imbalances in the brain which may cause depression.


Again, although clinical studies on the subject are eagerly awaited, there is much anecdotal evidence.

Many people, especially the elderly and long term depressed, have reported a significant improvement in vitality and well being after taking Spirulina.



* DETOXIFICATION *

Dr Strengler also found Spirulina to be a great supplement to use for helping patients with detoxification. The protein content also helps with blood sugar stabilization.

Spirulina helps to bind and excrete heavy metals out of the body. In addition, it has been shown to increase the beneficial bacteria, such as Lactobacillus and Bifidus, by acting as a “food” for these friendly floras.



* DIABETES AND CATARACTS *

Diabetes is a typical disease of civilized countries due to because of high living standards. 

We are consuming too much animal protein and high-calorie foods.

We know that most proteins need vitamin B6 to be smoothly metabolised.  Diabetes patients either dislike vegetables and fruits, or eat too few and hence suffer from a deficiency of magnesium (Mg).

Vitamin B6 cannot be absorbed without Mg and any disturbance in protein metabolism results in disease. Vitamin B6 and Mg play a key role in the contraction of diabetes.

Dr. Adelle Davis described the pathogenicity of diabetes:

"When there is not enough of vitamin B6, the utilization of absorbed tryptophan (one kind of amino acid) is abnormal, and it is converted to toxic xanthurinic acid.  When an animal is deficient in vitamin B6, the level of xanthurinic acid in the blood is too high, and the pancreas will be damaged in 48 hours."

Consequently, insulin secretion is reduced and diabetes occurs. Meanwhile the blood sugar level increases and sugar is excreted in the urine." If the supply of vitamin B6 is correct, the xanthurinic acid will decrease. If the pancreas is only mildly damaged, the patient's symptoms will be diminished and his health restored.

If this vitamin is always deficient, the diabetic's conditions will deteriorate until death.

Since Mg may decrease the body's dependence on vitamin B6, supplementing the treatment with Mg will also diminish the production of xanthurinic acid. A diabetic patient has an especially low Mg content in his blood, because diabetes is caused by both vitamin B6 and Mg deficiencies."

A diabetic patient's pancreas cannot secrete insulin. The normal treatment is to inject insulin to reduce the level of blood sugar.

But this method risks the occurrence of insulin shock, as blood sugar falls sharply.

Insulin relieves the diabetic symptoms temporarily but does not help pancreatic function, so the diabetic's regimen will be kept for the rest of his life.

The basic approach in treating diabetes is to enhance the body's nutrition to halt the deterioration of the pancreas and restore its normal functioning.

Many clinical reports made by Prof. Chu Nai Tan Mi of Japan Sake Cyoku Medical University proved that Spirulina is dramatically effective in the restoration of a healthy condition with diabetics.

There was a case of a 55-year old male with diabetes, height 168 cm, weight 70 kg who already had diabetic complications, that is, mild cataracts in both eyes. 

He took 7 capsules of Spirulina at each meal, three times a day. He was completely normal after taking Spirulina for two months. His cataracts got better and experienced significant weight loss.

However, it is necessary for patients with more sever cases to take Spirulina for 3 to 6 months.

Spirulina contains 1.33 % chlorophyll (Mg), ten times more than in common vegetables and others such as high vegetable protein, vitamin B1, vitamin B2, pantothenic acid, Zn etc. that may enhance the production of natural insulin.

Polysaccharide sugars in Spirulina maintain a steady blood sugar level and helped to curb food cravings because the comprehensive nutrients it supplies that satisfies the body.

Weight loss and reduced sugar craving meant that patients did not need as much insulin.



* DIGESTIVE PROBLEMS *

It is easy to contract gastric or duodenal ulcers in such a competitive and tense industrial society as we live in now. We suffer from the fact that ulcer patients cannot be cured after taking so many drugs and seeing so many physicians.

The main cause of ulcers is stress.  What is stress?

Stress is caused in part by factors such as fatigue, tension, bad temper, inadequate sleep, viral infection, lack of nutrients, especially protein, or when one is under prolonged stress.

Stress leads to over-breathing (hyperventilation) which in turn causes further health problems (asthma and various nutrient deficient 'diseases' as sinusitis, hypertension, ear infections, eczema, rhinitis, chronic fatigue syndrome and sleep apnea).  Protein is stored in many organs, e.g. the liver, lymphaden and thymus.

Prolonged stress not only exhausts the protein stores, but it uses up the somatoprotein of the stomach and intestinal walls as well. The stomach and intestinal walls get thinner and the mucus gland in the stomach wall begins to atrophy and suffer damage. When the secretion of mucus is not sufficient, the stomach wall loses its protection.

When food enters the stomach via the oesophagus, the stomach starts to secrete pepsin. HC1 contained in pepsin directly attacks the stomach wall, resulting in stomachalgia. Most stomachic drugs contain antacids to neutralize gastric acid.

When gastric acid is reduced, the pain is reduced, but it is not cured, it is just temporarily relieved. Gastric acid is very valuable; it decomposes protein and minerals to amino acid. Stomachic drugs such as antacids prevent digestion of protein and minerals, which in turn prevents healing of peptic ulcers.

As the stress increases, an operation can no longer be avoided unless the sufferer alters his diet (to include Spirulina and colloidal minerals) and stress levels are reduced.

Spirulina has been shown to stimulate the growth of healthy bacteria in the intestines.

Research in Japan showed that Spirulina increased lactobacillus in rats by 300% over one hundred days, compared with a control group. Vitamin B1 absorption also improved by 43% and the researchers concluded that Spirulina increases both lactobacillus and the absorption of vitamin B1.

Healthy lactobacillus promotes bowel health by preventing constipation, fighting infections and helping to detoxify potentially poisonous chemicals in your food.

As well as keeping the gut healthy and improving elimination, it helps with digestion and absorption of food and stimulates the immune system.

According to the study of an American scientist, the major reason for ulcers is the overheating of the bile juices.

Although cases of duodenal ulcers are relatively few, they are principally caused by overheated bile juices.  Normal bile juices are bright yellow and alkaline. When the alkaline element in the liver is exhausted it cannot be replaced.

The bile juices then become acidic and corrode the stomach lining, leading to the overheating of the bile juices.

Spirulina, being rich in alkaline content, is the best diet therapy for this condition.



* GUM DISEASES *

In 1941, an American dentist, S. L. Goldberg, successfully treated 300 patients suffering from pyorrhoea (bleeding gums and loosening teeth) with liquid chlorophyll.

He discovered that those who were also suffering from Vincent's disease, a gum infection and bad breath caused by lack of B-complex vitamins and exacerbated by stress, also improved significantly.


He encouraged his patients to squirt liquid chlorophyll between their teeth at least four times a day and to rinse their mouths with a chlorophyll-based mouthwash.

His patients' teeth tightened in the gums, the bleeding stopped and new tissue grew over the gums to replace damaged tissue leading to fresher breath.

Chlorophyll was used extensively on the battlefields of both World Wars as an emergency procedure to disinfect wounds, prevent infection and promote healing in damaged tissue.

Spirulina has extremely high chlorophyll content. In fact, it is entirely responsible for its green pigment (phycocyanin is the blue pigment).

Taking Spirulina will ensure rapid healing of damaged tissue and providing a concentrated source of calcium to maintain the health of teeth, gums and fresh breath.

There is profound value of chlorophyll to the human body.

Chlorophyll is one of the most powerful detoxificants of a human body, it is a savage killer of harmful bacteria in the digestive tract and eliminator of body odours.

Most plant-eating animals have a very pleasant body and breath smell because of chlorophyll in the plants they eat. It is excellent calcium controller, thus preventing a host of calcium deficiency illnesses. 



* HAEMORRHOIDS (PILES) *

According to Adelle Davis' report, haemorrhoids come from vitamin B6 deficiency.  The exact reason is still unknown to scientists.

According to actual experiences in diet therapy, a combination of Spirulina and vitamin B6 may be the best agent to get rid of haemorrhoids.

Spirulina also contains alkaline elements (K, Mg etc.) which help prevent intestinal spasmodic constipation.

Magnesium, vitamin B6, methionine and serine synthesize more choline, while other components make the bile normal, which helps prevent undigested lipid, iron and calcium from combining to create hard stools and hence constipation.

Haemorrhoids heal more easily if there is no constipation.  It can be quite severe.

In many cases, a combination of Spirulina and 100 - 200 mg/day of vitamin B6, caused dove-egg sized internal piles to disappear in a week, thus avoiding the pain and hardship of an operation.  If necessary, the dosage of vitamin B6 may be increased up to 300 mg daily.

But after the symptoms disappear the dosage of vitamin B6 should be decreased. 10 mg daily is enough. The rate of recovery for geriatric patients is slow, usually taking 1 to 2 months.

Normal therapy should be accompanied by an improvement in diet to more alkaline-based food.



* HEART DISEASES *

A 10-year study into beta carotene's effect on cancer at the Harvard Medical School surprisingly revealed in an interim report on coronary heart disease.

Those who took extra beta-carotene suffered half as many heart attacks, strokes and heart surgical operations as those who did not.


The researchers acknowledged that beta-carotene is as useful an agent for controlling heart disease as it is for cancer.

Beta-carotene also appears to prevent the formation and oxidation of low-density lipoprotein (LDL) cholesterol, thereby ensuring that the arteries do not become blocked.

Spirulina contains very high levels of both 'cis' and 'trans' beta-carotene.

US studies have proven that a deficiency in Selenium causes heart attacks. 

Selenium is found in both Spirulina and Colloidal Minerals.



* HEPATIC DISEASES (LIVER) *

A normal liver is extremely important as can decompose toxins and synthesizes multiple amino acids to protect body tissues. When needed, it will convert protein to sugar and lipid.

The liver may also produce lecithin, cholesterol, bile juice and albumin for cleaning waste, thrombin for blood aggregate and various enzymes and coenzymes.

It can convert sugar to glycogen and vice versa when needed as well.  It also stores iron, copper and many trace minerals and equal amounts of vitamins A, D, E, K and B group.

But, a damaged liver will disturb these functions due to environmental contamination, pesticide residue, drugs, viruses and toxicants invading the body.

This will disturb absorption of nutrients and liver will lose its detoxification ability.  When attacked by toxins, alcohol, or infection, it needs even more nutrients to function well.

Japanese studies on patients with severe liver disease, including acute and chronic hepatitis and cirrhosis through alcohol abuse, revealed that blue-green algae can boost the liver's effectiveness in 2 to 6 weeks

The high vegetative protein contained in Spirulina is especially beneficial to the hepatic patient.

Spirulina also contains a large amount of methionine and serine, which with the help of Mg and vitamin B6 synthesize large amounts of choline.

Indeed, Spirulina has corrective and preventative powers for fatty liver and hepatocirrhosis.

Many enzymes are derived from protein, but without Mg and vitamin B6 the liver cannot synthesize various enzymes. A decrease of many hormonal functions may result.  When the insulin secretion inhibition hormone is inhibited in this way, the insulin in the blood will increase and the blood sugar will decrease.

Measuring the blood sugar is now the most popular method of testing for liver damage. With the help of potassium, glucose is converted to glycogen and stored.

When this is needed, it is released as heat for normal use as well as for prevention of hypoglycaemia and fatigue.

Spirulina contains a large amount of potassium, which is also good for the liver.



* HYPERTENSION (HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE) *

Experiments in Japan have shown that chlorophyll is a very powerful agent for increasing blood circulation to all the organs in the body by dilating blood vessels.

In the heart itself, it appears to aid the transmission of nerve impulses that control contraction. The heart rate is slowed down, yet each contraction is more powerful, improving the overall efficiency of the heart.

Biochem. Ph. D. Adelle Davis of USA, explained the relationship between nutrition and hypertension: "A test made on animals whose food is deficient of choline showed that the kidney could be damaged, resulting in hypertension.

Tests were made on 158 high risk hypertensive patients. 133 of them belonged to the reason unknown group, 20 to the brain or eye haemorrhage group, 3 to diabetes, 3 to heart disease, and 19 to renal disorders.  All of them were treated with drugs for a long period of time but not one improved.

After a while the therapy was stopped and changed to choline.  The hypertensive symptoms like headache, dizziness, tinnitus, papillae and constipation disappeared completely after 5 to 10 days of choline (one kind of vitamin B).  In three weeks the blood pressure went down.

The test seems to have proven that hypertension is intimately related to choline. Liver, eggs and brain have high choline content.

Though Spirulina is not exceptionally rich in Choline, based on the biochemistry theory, choline can be synthesized in vivo.

Serine may produce choline through the aid of vitamin B6 and methionine can be converted to choline as well.

Spirulina contains 3.23% serine and 1.95% methionine, totalling 5.18%. The content is very high and, provided that there is adequate vitamin B6, more choline can be synthesized to reduce the blood pressure.

Just having vitamin B6 is not enough.  Vitamin B6 should be converted to the active form of B6, PO4 with the help of Mg. Spirulina contains a high quantity of chlorophyll (1.33% of chlorophyll is Mg compound), so it may assist to complete the reaction.

Some patients lack potassium (K) and eat too much salt, thus aggravating hypertension.  Lack of K damages the glomerus, which filters blood, water and waste which then goes directly to the gall bladder by way of the ureter. When the glomerus is partially damaged the velocity of blood flow increases and the BP gets higher for body to carry out the filtration work.

Patients who have a dislike of vegetables have no way of getting enough potassium (K).

Spirulina contains 1.79% potassium, which is ten times higher than the percentage in common vegetables.

Therefore Spirulina can benefit these patients tremendously with BP reduced 20 - 30 mm after continuous usage of Spirulina for 2 weeks!

Research carried out by Professor Banyan and the Sato Medical College of Tokyo University has indicated that prostaglandin E2 may affect abnormal blood pressure but not normal blood pressure.  It therefore can be developed as a blood pressure regulating agent.

Renal (kidney) toxicity in rats caused by para-Aminophenol (pain reliever) and Cisplatin (anti-cancer) was significantly reduced by the phycocyanin extract of Spirulina.

Researchers concluded that phycocyanin plays a major role in the protective effect of Spirulina against renal failure caused by mercury and pharmaceutical drugs, and that Spirulina might be applicable to the reduction of general renal dysfunction.
